I like what I've seen so far. I'm curious about output formats though. Why use Quicktime and/or Flash? Any preference? Why not just do a quick YouTube upload and embed that?

Also, I loved the music in the Cabin Fever video.

Nice job. How long did it take you to shoot and edit?
I'm glad you used QT instead of Youtube, quality is sooooo much better.

Chris,

It’s funny you ask about the output formats. As you can see I’ve been dancing all over the place on my blog with video formats. I’m still exploring and trying to get my mind around the beast of video compression.

I haven’t been using Youtube for the reason Mark mentioned...quality. I feel like my hands are tied not being able to adjust the compression settings.

For my first video to post, I used http://www.videoegg.com - you can see the video on this post...

I tried half a dozen free video hosts and was most pleased with their balance of quality and ease of use. I did however make a resolution that night to learn how to compress video myself and have a little more control over the final product. It’s been a longer journey than I anticipated.

I like the quality of QT, but too much of the world still uses PC’s and aren’t setup to watch them. That is why I am trying to learn flash video compression.

If I need to post something quickly, I will likely use videoegg - that is until I get proficient in compressing and embedding flash video myself.

Mark,

I rode along with Joe for one night as he plowed his route. It was a four hour ride. I obviously didn’t shoot that whole time though.

I ended up with a 40:1 ratio of raw footage to final edit. Most of that is because I had about a 12 minute interview, which I only used two sentences from in my final edit. My aim is to be around 20-25:1.

I’m guessing I spent about 7 hours editing it - I wasn’t counting. I’m still familiarizing myself with the features and functions of Final Cut Pro, so a lot of that time was spent trying to figure out how to do split frames, or why I couldn’t change the speed of a clip, etc. I figured it out eventually, but hope to become more efficient. Editing is a timely endeavor and I’m a firm believer of giving yourself adequate time to create an edit worth watching.

Brady, Richard just posted a compression tutorial at MultimediaShooter.com. Go and have a look!

Thanks for all the info. Have to figure this out for a project I'm working on. Free applets are a must, since it's just me doing this. Videoegg looks promising in that regard.

Nice split-screen. The small-ish format made the split-screen a little tough to fully appreciate. But, overall this is right up there with the rest of your efforts...great!

I second Mindy's plug for Richard's tutorial at MultimediaShooter.com.

Hey, once you get some serious web space, you need to publish some of your work at sizes like the Toronto Star is doing. Take a look at this.
